Hello, there! I have some extra time on my hands, and I have been wanting to post all week, so here we are. My friend and I were talking today, and she asked me about this book in particular, knowing I had read it. My response to her can be summed up in this post. Truth be told, this will be one of the most controversial posts that I have ever done on this blog. I am not ashamed to admit this, though. Before I begin, I have actually briefly posted about this book before, but it was while I was in the process of reading it, and I wasn't fully sharing my opinion. If you would like to read that post, just click here!

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglass Adams is supposed to be a treasured and amazing piece of literature. The Washington Post Book World says it's, "Extremely funny... inspired lunacy [and] over much too soon." It also made its way to becoming a New York Times Bestseller. This is why I wanted to like it so bad! It is supposed to be an incredible novel, but... well... it wasn't my cup of tea.

I love Sci-Fi books, and especially those that deal with adventure and travel, but that's not what this felt like. To me, this book had a very loose and meandering plot. It felt like a loosely related set of short stories, except you gain a little more knowledge of the main character (Arthur Dent) through each story. I say this because the plot of the story depends on them traveling through the galaxy, so you never get a constant sense of supporting characters, settings, or goals. On top of that, it had a lot of philosophical questions in it that really didn't feel that deep. I suppose I could've been okay with that (that in itself is very similar to The Midnight Library, which I loved). Except then, Douglass Adams tried to add a layer of humor that, personally, I didn't find very funny. I don't mean for this to turn into a "Karen session." I need you to understand that this book, frankly, wasn't my cup of tea, and it could be yours! And that's perfectly fine... but the reason I started this blog was to share my thoughts on books, and I wouldn't be doing that if I didn't share books I disliked as well.

This book obviously wasn't all bad. There were chapters that I enjoyed very much, but it just didn't click for me. It felt like it took me an eternity to finish, and in my opinion, life's too short to waste time on books you dislike. I did indeed feel like I wasted my time on this. I can now say that I've read it, and I feel like it was important that I did so. That being said, I watched the movie after reading this book, and (this is legitimately insane) ... I preferred it! I never prefer a movie over a book! It just felt like it had more structure and plot. Those two things were my main complaint about the book, so yes, the movie is worth it. Maybe I wasn't ready to read the book, maybe the book isn't right for me, but I am here to share my opinion. Watch the movie. Now, if someone reading this has read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I'm sure you have your own thoughts on it (I even know that one of my followers bought me the book as a gift). I appreciate any gifts, such as books, so much! Alas, as a reader, there are bound to be books that just aren't right. Beyond being a reader, in life in general, not everything will be astonishing. You will not always be thrilled by a decision you made or a position you received, but you make do.

Throughout this post, I have included several links to different posts, where you can learn more about my opinions and other books I have read. It really helps with the blog if you go check those out as well! No pressure, though! I just want to reiterate one more time that this post is just one girl's opinion, and while I believe that the girl's opinion is correct, you may not. That's fine! We can agree to disagree! I also would love to hear more about your experiences with books similar to this one or even this book itself, down in the comments! I'll leave you with this: You can love a book or hate a book, and that doesn't say anything about who you are. I am not going to say my READ THIS BOOK catchphrase right now, so I'm going to change it slightly. I beg of you to please go and READ A BOOK. Thank you!
