Quitting A Book
This post will be my last post as a middle schooler. I'm so excited to see what my next four years have in store for me, and I want to thank all the teachers who have guided me through this educational journey. Honestly, these past eleven years (CRAZY) have been so incredible! Thank you so much!
Alright, yeah..., that was cheesy. But it is all true, and I am very grateful to everyone who has consistently checked in on my blog. For this post, though, I want to discuss something that I often avoid on this blog: Quitting books. Honestly, I think that in the reading community, giving up on a book is frowned upon, but I haven't met a single avid reader who has never done so. In my opinion, life is short, so read good books. Mark Twain once said, "The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them." I agree. I think that you shouldn't be giving up on books immediately, but at some point, you must draw the line.
For most books, that line (for me at least) is somewhere between page 50 and 80. If I still hate the book by then, it's simply not worth my time. I actually have a surprisingly long list of these books that I have shelved. When I "quit a book," I usually just tell myself "not right now," so here is my list of all my "not right now" books.
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
1948 by George Orwell
The Lord of The Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Once and Future King by T.H. White
All of those books are supposed to be among the best of literature. Little Women is iconic. George Orwell was prolific. The Lord of the Rings is magical. The Once and Future King is esteemed. Alas, all of these books I couldn't manage to read. For some of them, I just didn't understand them. Some of the books, I could never get into the plot. And certain ones ( cough-cough-LotR-cough) were just too long for a book I didn't enjoy. Whatever the cause, I gave up. For all of these books, I WANTED to love them so much, but I couldn't. That's okay. I'm a good reader, and just because I'm not ready for George Orwell does not take away from that.
These are my main books, but I'm sure that I've read more books than these. I love reading, and I think this is an important side to show. You don't need to be perfect, and you are allowed to quit books. Also, just because I didn't like the books above doesn't mean that you won't! Please read these books and share your opinion! Personally, they just weren't for me. I've been posting a lot, but during the summer I will become less consistent (bear with me). Anyways, thank you so much for checking in, and as I always say: READ A BOOK!
