I want to start off by saying if you haven't read my other post about The Golden Compass then this post won't make much sense. I'd also like to say that this might include some spoilers if you haven't read book one yet. I did a book report on The Subtle Knife, and I truly enjoyed it. I have said before that I don't really like mystery books. This fact still stands, but I do think that this book has some amount of mystery to it that I like. Maybe it is my taste in books changing, but in my opinion, this book is just really well written. It is an adventure for knowledge; it has death, love, war, and magic.
In this book Lyra crosses a bridge in between worlds and discovers a whole other dimension called "Citta'gazze" . There Lyra meets a boy about her age fleeing from his world. His world is much like ours (in fact, it might be ours). The boy's name is Will. Will's dad disappeared when Will was a small child. On top of that, Will's mother is neuartic. For instance, at a park she will count every leaf on a bush. Will has protected his mother from the real world for a long time, but now he has to go look for his father.
When Will and Lyra meet, they automatically don't like each other, but there is not a single other soul in Citta'gazze; they need each other to stay alive. Soon they meet kids in Citta'gazze, so they learn they aren't the only people. They learn about something called the subtle knife which can cut through anything (including dimensions). With Lyra's alethiometer (truth teller) Lyra and Will attempt to:
Find Will's father
Find more out about dust
Stay alive
A witch named Serifina Pekkala also plays an important role in the book. She does everything she can to protect Lyra. Serifina knows everthing that Lyra is trying so hard to learn. Serifina read the "prophecy" as the book says and this is what causes Serifina to make sure Lyra is safe or alive.
This book is written in third person limited omniscient, but each chapter tells what different characters are doing rather than just one. In my opinion, this makes the book so much better because by the end of the book you can see that what all of the characters are doing relate to other charcters. I also like the way the book is written because you know more than Lyra and Will. I highly reccomend this book.
This book was amazing, and I have started the third and final book of the series already. I love the series so much! The book has so much more going on in it than I explained but I covered the very baseline. If you are curious what happens to Lyra and Will I reccommend you read the book!
