To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most well-known coming-of-age novels in America. Recently, I read this book for school. We have read three other books beyond TKAM and this was by far my favorite. In the future, you can expect summaries on other classroom books, but right now, let's dive into TKAM.

To Kill a Mockingbird revolves around a young girl, Scout Finch, who is growing up in a small town in Alabama. Throughout the journey she learns about racism, sexism, and crime. Scout's father, Atticus Finch, is a lawyer tasked with defending a black man named Tom Robinson, charged with rape. The stacks are fully stacked against them due to racism and white privilege. Scout faces exile at school and begins noticing small things that she hadn't before. Her brother slowly becomes teenager, leaving Scout to figure out 1st grade all on her own.

This is an amazing book to discuss themes, the author's purpose, and figurative language in a classroom. There are plenty of books we have read in class, where I don't feel like I'm gaining anything from reading them. This is not one of them. I can never get over Lee's incredible word choice and plotline. Of course, any student will have their grievances about the number of worksheets and assigned reading there was, but speaking from a literary standpoint, this book was incredible. I don't usually enjoy rereading books, but I have to say that I would fully reread this book and fall in love all over again.

Harper Lee Statistics – WordsRated. 26 Oct. 2022,

Thank you so much for reading! The next post will be my 100th post on this blog (I know, crazy!), and I'm compiling a summer reading list. Go Set a Watchman (Harper Lee's other book) will 100% have an appearance. Now, as I always say, GO READ A BOOK!

Thank you (;
