I will start by saying the end is not the expected. It's sweet though. Gabe is saved and the people get to experience life. What is life anyways? They talk about this in Tuck Everlasting, too. (that is recommended, too) Is it living then dying? Is it enjoying it? Is it being present? Remembering past times? Hearing music and seeing color? In The Giver my mom commented she thought it was music, color, and love. They have no love either. Can you imagine? All that given to one person, a single person. They cannot tell anyone about it . It has got to be overwhelming. Painful too. Receiving and being in all the old, new, and any other types of memories. It must be fun, too, though. Like seeing the beach in a memory. Having the ability to see color. Also, he's given SO MUCH respect. The job is different in different case scenarios but it is cool. What surprised me at the end though? Read to find out.
